Description
Muckle Cross in Elgin is a monument designed by Sydney Mitchell in 1888. It features a 12-foot high hexagonal base raised on three steps, styled after a structure that was destroyed around 1650. The base is made of ashlar and has fluted pilasters at each corner topped with Ionic capitals and gargoyles. There are shell-headed niches with seats on five sides, with an entrance to the platform on the sixth side. The tall parapet is adorned with panelled pilasters and displays the St Giles emblem on the eastern face. Atop the structure is a 12-foot high granite shaft that supports a lion rampant holding a shield.
