Employment Office, 23-25 Castle Street, Banff

The Employment Office at 23-25 Castle Street in Banff is a two-storey and attic building constructed between 1830 and 1840. It features a three-bay façade that faces the street, made of dark square whinstone with painted tooled and polished ashlar dressings, and rubble whinstone return gables. The entrance is centrally located and is framed by pilasters and a cornice, with an additional doorway in the extreme left (southeast) bay. The ground floor windows have panelled aprons, while the first-floor windows are connected by a wide bandcourse. There is a single ground and first-floor window in the return north gable. The building includes late 19th-century canted wallhead dormers in the outer bays. The ground floor windows have modern two-pane glazing, the first-floor windows have 12-pane glazing, and the dormers feature plate glass and four-pane windows. The roof is slate, with a deep moulded wallhead cornice, coped end stacks, and flat skewputs.

Inside, the former dining room and hall have simple moulded friezes. The staircase between the ground and first floors is adorned with fine decorative cast-iron balusters featuring an anthemion design, while the attic stair has a simpler baluster design.
