Town House, 34 Low Street, Banff

The Town House at 34 Low Street in Banff was built in 1796 by James Reid, a squarewright. This plain three-storey building features a dormerless attic and has a regular five-bay frontage. The exterior is made of ashlar stone, with the ground floor rusticated and polished ashlar dressings. The return gables and rear are harled.

The entrance has a double-leaf panelled door at the center, and the windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The building has rusticated quoins and a deep moulded eaves cornice. There are moulded cornices on the end and rear stacks, and the front block has a gabled platform slate roof, while the rear has a plain gable.

Inside, there is a wide cantilevered stone staircase with a moulded underside, a plain handrail, and plain iron balusters. The former first-floor drawing room features a simple plaster cornice, and some six-panel raised and fielded doors are still intact.
