Description

This is a single-storey garden shelter situated within the grounds of St. Joseph’s Home, Seaview, in the townland of Ringmackilroy, Warrenpoint. It likely dates from between 1900 and 1919, believed to have been erected by the Great Northern Railway Company when they owned the property. The structure was presumably associated with the Great Northern Railway Hotel (listed separately as HB16/12/005A), which the GNRC sold in the late 1920s.

The shelter has a pitched felted roof with overhanging eaves and gables. The left and right gables feature ‘A’ framed timber bargeboards with decorative drop finials and curved braces. The central front gable has a plain, modern bargeboard. The front walls are clad in tongue-and-groove (t+g) sheet material set over a concrete base; the lower portion is horizontally sheeted, while the upper portion (above cill level) is vertically sheeted. A set of three moulded concrete steps leads to a doorway, framed by timber posts with chamfered bases and moulded capitals. Small arched braces support the lintel above the doorway. The door is wide and slides internally; it has a bottom panel of painted plywood sheeting and two top margin-paned windows. Two pairs of windows flank the doorway, and there are also matching pairs of windows in the left and right gables. All windows are margin-paned with a 1/1 configuration, separated by timber mullions. The rear elevation is blank. The shelter is considered to possess some architectural appeal but is not considered to have significant architectural or historic interest.
