Description
This is a two-storey, two-bay terrace house situated on Osborne Promenade in Warrenpoint, County Down, facing the sea. The house dates from approximately 1820 to 1839 and is shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map as part of a terrace. It was initially occupied by Mrs. Osborne in 1835, who also resided at numbers 1 and 2 on the terrace. The building measures 17 feet 6 inches by 36 feet 6 inches by 25 feet.
The front elevation, facing southwest, is line rendered and painted. The right bay features moulded arrises and two granite steps leading to a boarded-up doorway, which is set within a finely dressed, semi-elliptical headed granite doorcase with moulded arrises. This doorcase is framed by finely dressed Ionic columns supporting a moulded entablature, topped by a damaged, leaded peacock-tailed fanlight. A large modern window occupies the ground floor left bay, set within an enlarged opening and covered by a timber fascia. There are three first-floor windows, all fixed lights with top-hung transoms and painted granite cills. The roof is pitched and covered with artificial slate, featuring two wall-head dormers with hipped roofs and modern casement windows. Ogee rainwater goods are present. A small area to the front of the house is enclosed by a cement-rendered dwarf wall with granite coping and modern railings. The left gable abuts the adjoining buildings at numbers 4 and 5 Osborne Promenade, while the right gable is abutted by number 2 Osborne Promenade. The rear elevation was not inspected.
Historic imagery, including an old postcard dated circa 1920, shows that the façade originally featured tripartite Georgian paned sash windows on the ground floor and 6/6 sash windows on the first floor. The listing includes the house and its railings. While the building exhibits architectural ornamentation, later alterations have diminished its original character. The building holds local historical interest and possesses group value, relating to the surrounding terrace.
