Description

This is a two-story, single-bay house located within a terrace facing the sea on Osborne Promenade in Warrenpoint, County Down. The building dates from approximately 1820 to 1839 and is significantly altered, retaining no original features of particular interest. The main entrance is on the right gable elevation, which faces southwest. It has a pitched roof covered with artificial slate, with an unpainted rendered chimney situated at the left end of the ridge. A wall-head dormer with a hipped roof and modern casement windows projects from the front slope of the roof. Rainwater goods are of an ogee design.

The front elevation is rendered and painted, with a large modern window positioned on the left side, set within an enlarged opening. Above it are two first-floor windows, both featuring fixed lights with top-hung transoms and painted granite cills. A stucco panel reading "OSBORNE/TERRACE" is positioned on the right-hand side, between the ground and first floors. A small front garden is enclosed by a low cement-rendered wall with granite coping. The left gable abuts the adjacent property at number 2 Osborne Promenade. The rear elevation was not inspected. The right gable, facing southeast, is rendered and painted, with modern windows at both ground and first floor levels, and two further windows in the attic gable. A modern lean-to porch with a monopitched roof and entirely modern detailing is located on the ground floor to the right of a window.

The property, measuring 25 feet by 36 feet 6 inches by 25 feet, was shown on an Ordnance Survey map of 1834, as part of the terrace. The 1835 First Valuation recorded that it was occupied by Mrs. Osborne, who also resided in the adjoining properties. An old postcard depicts the front facades of the terrace houses with tripartite Georgian paned sash windows on the ground floor and 6/6 sash windows on the first floor. An older photograph shows the right gable had previously been slate hung. Local accounts suggest that this house and its neighbor may have originally functioned as a single dwelling.
