Description
The buildings at 50-54 Dominic Street, Newry, were early 19th-century houses, demolished and replaced by modern housing developed by the Northern Ireland Housing Executive. The original building comprised three houses, each with three floors and a basement. They had a slated roof, with slate hanging on the exposed return of number 54. The frontages were rendered and featured horizontal channeling on the ground floor, with lining on the upper floors. A chamfered plinth was present at ground floor level, with a cill course at the first floor. The windows were double-hung with ground-floor glazing. The entrances were dressed in granite, with number 50 set within a segmental-arched recess flanked by Doric columns supporting an entablature and a fanlight above. Numbers 52 and 54 had semi-circular arched heads over their fanlights, which were also ground-floor glazed, and were situated either side of a vehicle entrance. A separate cart entrance was located beside the entrance to number 50. The facade originally contained nine windows across the three houses.
According to the initial survey, number 50 was the birthplace of Charles Russell, who became Lord Chief Justice of England. Number 52 was the home of Jenny Verner when she eloped with John Mitchell, a patriot. The buildings were constructed between 1820 and 1839.
