Description

61 Dominic Street is a three-storey, three-bay late Georgian dwelling on the west side of Dominic Street in Newry. Constructed between 1820 and 1839, it is distinguished by a slate-hung gable and a fanlit door. The building is now in office use.

The pitched natural slate roof has smooth rendered chimneys at the end of each gable and half-round metal rainwater goods. All walls are cement-dashed with smooth-rendered base course, except for the slate-hung south gable above first floor level. The main façade faces east and rises from the street via four granite steps with a modern metal handrail to a central door. The doorway is flanked by heavy timber pilasters and contains a front door of four broad boards with metal nail head studs. Sidelights with granite cills are now boarded up. Above the door is a semi-elliptical fanlight set within an ashlar granite arch. An electrical cable in metal housing runs up the façade to the left of the doorway. A wall plaque records that Lord Russell of Killowen (1832–1900), Lord Chief Justice, was born nearby in the block containing numbers 50–54.

All façade windows are painted timber sliding sash without horns. The ground floor contains a 6/1 window to the left of the door and a 6/6 window to the right, both with extractor fans inserted in the central pane of the top sash. Three first floor windows, all 6/6, align with the openings below. Three smaller 6/3 windows on the second floor are similarly aligned. All windows are now protected by security grilles. Both gables are abutted by adjoining buildings.

The rear façade has thirteen window openings, many of them recent inserts; only three retain their original Georgian paned sliding sashes. A modern metal escape stair with access doors at first floor and half-landing provides access to the second floor.

The building has been substantially altered, with extensive internal modifications resulting in loss of much original fabric and character. Only its external appearance now contributes to the streetscape. Historical records confirm the building's presence from the 1830s Valuation map onwards, with measurements in the c.1840 Valuation Book recording dimensions of 41 feet by 33 feet by 31 feet high. The Second Valuation of 1863 recorded 41 feet 3 inches by 33 feet 9 inches with three storeys. The First Valuation notes the house as not finished, indicating an early nineteenth century construction date, though even by 1863 it remained partly unfinished, suggesting incorporation of mid-nineteenth century features before twentieth century internal refurbishment.
