Description
This is a mid-19th century house located on Dominic Street, Newry. It stands to the left of a pair of late Georgian three-storey, two-bay dwellings, forming part of a terrace on the west side of the street. The roof is pitched and covered with artificial slate, featuring a smooth rendered chimney on the left gable and half-round metal rainwater goods. The walls are rendered with lined cement, and have a painted base course.
The main façade faces east. The street entrance is situated on the right side and features a painted timber door with an oval stained glass panel (installed around 1958), above which is a corresponding stained glass fanlight. These are set within an ashlar granite semi-elliptical arch with a projecting keystone. Timber four-paned side lights with granite cills are positioned on either side of the door. A cast iron boot scraper is recessed into the wall to the left of the door. All windows are painted timber 2/2 sliding sash windows with exposed boxes and horns. A single window is located to the left of the front door, with two windows on each of the floors above. The right gable abuts the adjacent property at No. 29. A portion of the left gable, which projects above the abutting building, is slate hung.
The rear elevation is rendered and retains some sliding sash windows. A flat-roofed bathroom extension has been added to the half-landing level on the left side, along with a refurbished two-storey return on the right. Both returns feature modern windows.
Historical records from around 1840 describe a building of slightly different dimensions (23’6” x 32’6” x 28’). An 1863 Valuation describes a building more closely resembling the present structure (25’6” x 34’6” x 3 storeys with a two-storey return), suggesting a likely rebuilding in the mid-19th century, potentially alongside No. 29. While demonstrating good proportions, ornamentation, and style, alterations to the building detract somewhat from its original character. The building holds local historical interest.
