Description

A two-storey, one-bay building on Cornmarket in Newry, constructed between 1863 and 1873, associated with the nearby Dempster's flax spinning mill. The building is aligned north-south with its main facade facing east; the rear elevation backs onto the former railway line to the Albert Basin.

The structure is built of granite rubble brought to courses, except between openings, with finely dressed granite quoins. It has a gabled natural slate roof with metal rainwater goods over a projecting brick eaves course (gutters missing at the rear). The rear pitch contains six cast-iron skylights with corrugated transparent plastic skylights between them. The right gable is coped with tiles on both pitches.

The original symmetry of the main facade has been compromised by alterations to the openings. Originally there were wide segmental brick-headed doors at each end of the ground floor, between which were four tall windows. The left entrance has been infilled and is now abutted by a one-storey monopitched outbuilding with cement-rendered walls. To its right is a window with a 20-paned top sash and 2-paned horizontally divided bottom sash. Jambs throughout are stepped red brick; heads are also of brick and cills are of granite. To the right is a modern double door with side and transom lights inserted into an original window opening, now partially infilled and widened, above which is a projecting flat metal loading platform. Further right are two 20/20 sliding sash windows. The arched entrance at the extreme right is blocked and abutted by a one-storey shed with corrugated metal monopitched roof and cement block walls.

Originally the first floor contained six smaller 10/10 sliding sash windows; three of these openings and most windows have since been altered. From left to right: a 10/10 sliding sash; a partially blocked opening with modern fixed pane and tongue-and-groove boarding above; a partially blocked opening containing a door with concrete lintel, with part of the wall underneath removed (metal platform at front); a 5/5 sliding sash; a 5/10 sliding sash; and another opening similar to the third, with a metal fire escape at front.

On the right gable, ground floor walls are cement dashed without openings. At first floor is a blocked opening and a window opening at the apex, now boarded with tongue-and-groove sheeting. Marking indicates a demolished one-storey outhouse with curved roof. The left gable is plain with an infilled window at the apex.

The rear elevation is heavily overgrown with ivy. Ground floor has three openings, all boarded up from inside: a brick-trimmed segmental-headed opening with a 1/2 top-pivoted window, and two rectangular openings with cement block surrounds. At first floor are two ventilation slits, now infilled.

The building's function is uncertain, though it may have been a flax scutching mill, cited in the 1873 Valuation Revision book as containing 36 scutching stocks. It does not appear in the 1863 Valuation book but is shown on the 1873 Valuation Revision map, indicating construction between these dates. The building now serves as a shop and is of industrial archaeological interest.
