Description

The South Down Dental Clinic is the right-hand building of a pair of late Georgian, three-storey, two-bay dwellings located on the west side of Dominic Street in Newry. This building has suffered significant loss of internal fabric and character, and its façade is affected by recent alterations.

The building has an artificial pitched slate roof with a smooth rendered chimney on the left party wall, and half-round metal rainwater goods. The walls are cream-painted lined render with a painted base course. The main façade faces east. A centrally placed modern painted four-panel entrance door is flanked by timber-pilastered four-paned sidelights with granite cills. Above the door is a cast iron fanlight, now glazed from behind, set within a rendered semi-elliptical arch with a raised keystone. To the right is a coach entrance with a similar arch, both sharing a central pier. The coach entrance opening has been infilled behind vertically sheeted mock double wooden doors. All windows are painted timber 2/2 sliding sash windows with exposed boxes and modern wrought steel grilles. There is a single window to the left of the pedestrian door, and two windows on each of the upper floors, aligned with the ground floor window and the shared pier between the door and the coach arch. A portion of the right gable, projecting above the abutting building, is smooth cement rendered. The left gable abuts number 31 Dominic Street. The rear elevation has been extensively altered with a ground floor extension, a metal fire escape stair, and modern casement windows and openings.

A building is referenced in the First Valuation book around 1840, described as measuring 23 feet by 32 feet 6 inches by 28 feet. The measurements do not match the present building's 30-foot façade, suggesting it may not be the same structure. The 1863 Valuation book describes a building measuring 27 feet by 33 feet by three storeys, a size more consistent with the current building, implying a rebuild occurred in the mid-19th century. The building was formerly used as a house and is currently a health centre. It was delisted on March 26, 2004.
