Description
This is a late Georgian three-storey dwelling with a basement, originally four windows wide, situated on the north-west side of Bridge Street in Newry. Although recently renovated, the front facade and railings remain as the primary original features, contributing to the streetscape. The building was built between 1800 and 1819.
The main façade faces south-east. A pitched roof covered in natural slate is topped with half-round metal rainwater goods. Rendered chimneys with projecting caps are visible on each gable. The front elevation has lined render and decorative stepped V-jointed quoins. The front door is approached by three granite steps, the bottom one projecting slightly into the street, and leads to a modern four-panelled painted door, the top two panels being glazed, set within an ashlar granite Tuscan aedicule. Above the entablature is a decorative fanlight within an elliptical arch. All façade windows have granite cills and painted timber sliding sashes with horns. These windows have been refurbished with double-glazing, each pane secured with black-painted slips instead of putty. The ground floor windows are 6/6, with one to the left of the door and two to the right. The first floor has four 6/6 windows, and the second floor four smaller 6/3 windows. The basement windows are 3/3 sliding sashes, aligned with the ground floor. Both gables are abutted by adjoining buildings. The rear elevation has been significantly altered and extended. The front railings, and those on either side of the steps to the front door, consist of urn-topped cast-iron corner posts and plain metal railings, set on a chamfered ashlar granite base. A building of 39’6” x 26’6” x 27’6” high, with a 7’6” high basement, was recorded at this location in approximately 1840, and at that time had the highest valuation of any building along Bridge Street.
