Gates & Pillars at Ivybrook Lodge, 20 Drumalane Road, Newry, Co Down BT35 8AP

The gates, piers, and screen form an attractive entrance to the grounds of Ivybrook Lodge and enhance its setting. The pair of wrought iron carriage gates, located at the main entrance, are divided into upper and lower sections with vertical bar detail featuring cast details and spearhead finials to each bar. They stand on solid granite piers that rest on projecting plinths, with moulded panels facing the street and overhanging moulded copings. Flanking the piers is a screen constructed of random rubble granite faced with squared granite blocks laid in irregular courses, also featuring overhanging chamfered copings. The screen terminates with small square granite block piers topped with pyramidal caps.

The gates and screen were likely erected during the mid-19th century, coinciding with an extension of the house and landscaping of the grounds. An Ordnance Survey map from 1861 (PRONI – OS8/20/1/24) provides a historical record. The architectural merit of the entrance lies in its style, proportions, ornamentation, and overall plan form. It also possesses local historical interest and contributes to the group value of the site. The structures are owned by the Health Board.
