Description
This pair of gate piers, gate, and flanking walls and piers are located immediately southeast of Higher Lodge, at the entrance to the drive at Black Hall. They date from the early to mid-19th century and are constructed of granite ashlar. The gate piers are square in plan and rusticated, featuring plain plinths and caps with chamfered granite coping that sweeps out in a curve to rusticated terminal piers topped with ball finials, which are smaller than the main gate piers leading to the carriageway. The wrought iron gate is contemporary and has seven rails that are progressively wider spaced towards the top. The stiles bend over the top rail to form scrolls, and the top rail features a scrolled cresting at the center with a cast iron anthelion. The curved braces where they meet at the center are also scrolled.
