Description

This section of the Newry Canal is an integral part of the waterway, notable as the first summit level canal in Britain and Ireland. Constructed between 1842 and 1850 under the direction of Sir John Rennie, it provided a critical economic link for Newry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The canal represents an extension of an earlier canal built in the 1740s, initially extended in 1765 to connect Newry with Lough Neagh. Originally, the canal joined the Newry River at Lower Fathom, but silting issues in the tidal channel led to a 2.5-kilometer extension to Victoria Locks in Upper Fathom to accommodate larger vessels. This stretch of the canal features a wide, open water channel embanked on its eastern side. It is now used primarily for recreational purposes. The canal is of industrial archaeological interest. Further details can be found in publications by J. Rennie (1851) and W.A. McCutcheon (1980), as well as archival records at PRONI VAL 12E/125/1/22. A related listing is HB16/30/029 (Albert Basin).
