Description

This is a one-story granite gate lodge associated with Drumalane House (also known as Ivybrook Lodge; HB16/29/007A). While it has some group value alongside Ivybrook Lodge, its character has been reduced by subsequent refurbishment. A high wall separates the lodge from Drumalane Road, which formerly led to a spinning mill (HB16/29/010).

The building has a pitched artificial slate roof with overhanging eaves and half-round rainwater goods. A brick chimney, capped with projecting concrete, is located towards the west end of the ridge. The walls are generally of lime render, except on the south side where they are constructed of finely dressed granite blocks laid in a strap-pointed, irregular pattern. The south wall features an entrance door towards the left, with stepped brick dressings leading to it via concrete steps and wheelchair ramp access. There are five window openings in the south wall: two to the left of the door and three to the right. These windows have stepped brick jambs, soldier course brick heads, and finely dressed granite cills, though the windows themselves are modern, two-pane casements with transoms and metal grilles to the front. The west gable is blank. The north wall contains two windows (matching those on the south wall) to the left and right of a central, modern door, also with metal grilles over. A single three-pane casement window with a transom and metal grille is found on the east gable.

The gate lodge first appears in the 1877 Valuation Revision book, belonging to the Drumalane Flax Spinning Company, which also owned the house and mill. Based on the occupants listed in the Valuations, it appears to have served the house rather than the mill.
