Description

St Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church, located on the corner of Drumalane Road and Dublin Road in Newry, Co Down, was constructed between 1940 and 1959. The building is a rectangular hall church with two halls attached to the left end of the east elevation. The roof is covered in natural slate and features metal rainwater goods. The walls are smooth rendered with a painted base course and some exposed concrete detailing. Steps lead to the central, semicircular-headed entrance, which is adorned with a moulded reredos on the north-facing gable. Above the entrance are three semicircular-headed stained glass windows, similarly surrounded by moulded details. The central window surround extends vertically to enclose a niche containing a statue of Christ. A stone cross sits atop the gable apex.

The right elevation, facing Dublin Road, is characterised by semicircular-headed windows with leaded glass. The first bay from the left is raised and features a projecting base course and a single tall window. The second bay is similar, though the wall is not raised forward. The third bay contains a pair of windows, with the wall stepping out flush with the eaves course. The fourth bay also has a pair of windows, but they are not full-length. A hipped roof return containing a confessional is positioned below the window cill level. The fifth bay has another pair of similar windows, and the sixth and final bay forms a windowless chancel. The left elevation mirrors the right, with the attached hall abutting the chancel side. The rear gable includes windows similar to those at the opposite end, as well as two tall semicircular-headed openings on either side.
