Description
The Church of the Holy Family is a Roman Catholic parish church built around 1899–1900 at Teconnaught, roughly 4 miles north-west of Downpatrick. It is a simple, two-storey structure in the Irish Gothic style, constructed from coursed rock-faced dark fieldstone rubble with rendered dressings. The building sits on a wedge of ground between the Drumconagher and Annacloy Roads and is well proportioned with consistent architectural detail both inside and out, making a notable contribution to its surroundings.
The church is oriented with its gable façade facing east. The main entrance at ground floor level consists of a timber-sheeted double door set within a rendered opening with grip moulding, housed in a small gabled bay with side buttresses and coping to the gable with a cross finial. Splayed steps lead to the doorway. To the left and right of the entrance bay are small roundel windows with trefoil tracery. Above the bay rises a grouping of three tall pointed-arch windows, the central window being the tallest, resting on a moulded sill course. A tiny pointed-arch opening with louvers sits above these. The façade features stepped buttresses and is topped with a gabled bellcote with cross finial.
The south façade of the nave displays a series of stepped buttresses with five pairs of tall pointed-arch windows between them. The north façade has a similar arrangement but includes a shallow flat-topped bay beneath the central pair of windows. The rear gable is dominated by a large gabled chancel bay with a group of three pointed-arch windows, buttresses, coping, and finial matching those of the front.
To the north side of the chancel stands a small gabled vestry projection. This features a double sash window to the north gable, a timber-sheeted flat-arch door to the shorter east face, and a smaller sash window to the west face. A chimney stack with a splayed base rises from the west side of the vestry roof.
The entire building rests on a bevelled base and has a moulded eaves course. All roof sections are gabled and slated with red clay ridge tiles. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted throughout.
To the west of the church is a small graveyard, with a newly built one-and-a-half-storey house to the north-west. The churchyard is enclosed by a low rubble wall with decorative wrought-iron gates to the front (east) and matching wrought-iron railings. The gates have square rubble pillars with rendered, multi-sided pyramidal caps.
The church holds local historic interest as an example of Irish Gothic parish church architecture of this period and possesses social and cultural importance for its historic role in the community.
