Description
This is a rotary pump located between Hillside Terrace and Drumaness, Ballynahinch, County Down. Constructed between 1900 and 1919, the pump is significant due to its local manufacture and its contribution to the group value of the adjacent listed terraces. It stands in a location between two rows of houses built for mill workers.
The pump features an undecorated, splay-shaped column topped with a fluted cap and boss finial. The base of the column is marked with the inscription "Winnington & Co Engineers Belfast 1907". The pump was not depicted on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map but appears on the 1920 edition. It represents a reminder of a time when drinking water was primarily sourced from street pumps. Further information can be found in the Environment Heritage Service report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond, published in January 1997. The pump is of industrial archaeological interest and holds local historical importance, demonstrating social and economic significance relating to the provision of water. It is owned by the local government.
