Description
This is a well-preserved example of a rotary water pump situated in a prominent roadside location in Ballymagorry, Strabane, County Tyrone. Constructed between 1900 and 1919 by the architectural firm Hadfield and Goldie, the pump serves as a reminder of a time when street-side access to drinking water was commonplace.
The pump is a rotary type, with a column that tapers outwards and is decorated with fluting. The cup also features fluted decoration culminating in a pointed finial. A spout lug is present but there is no pedestal. The handle on the flywheel is broken. It is of industrial archaeological interest, demonstrating local, social, cultural, and economic importance due to its rarity. The pump’s architectural merit stems from its style, proportions, and ornamentation. It was not shown on the 1905 Ordnance Survey map (held at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, map reference PRONI OS 10/6/5/2/1) suggesting it was installed after that date. Further information can be found in Fred Hammond’s report, 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A preliminary Survey,' published in January 1997, under Pump No. 1. The pump is owned by the local government.
