Pump at 126 Mullaghboy Road, Bellaghy, Magherafelt, Co. Londonderry

This is a well-preserved cow-tailed water pump, likely dating from between 1880 and 1899. It stands in its original position within a farmyard to the rear of a house, in the townland of Ballymacpeake Upper, near Bellaghy, Magherafelt, County Londonderry. The pump features a closed head lever mechanism, a plain, spirally decorated column, a fluted cap, and an acorn finial. It adjoins a concrete water tank which formerly served to cool milk. The pump is documented on Ordnance Survey maps from 1905 and 1927 (reference PRONI OS 10/5/37/6/1 and 2), and further details are included in Fred Hammond’s 1997 report, ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’, Pump No. 21. The pump is of industrial archaeological interest and possesses architectural value due to its style, proportions, and ornamentation, as well as owing local historical interest. It remains in private ownership and is used as a pump.
