Pump at rear of Bridge House, 14 Bridge Street, Castledawson, Magherafelt, Co. Londonderry

This is a decorated cow-tailed water pump situated at the rear of Bridge House, 14 Bridge Street, Castledawson, Co. Londonderry. The pump dates from between 1920 and 1939 and is located adjacent to the listed building (HB08/10/005). It is a typical cow tail closed head lever type pump with a spirally decorated column and a fluted cap topped with an acorn finial. An inscription reads 'H H Mcerlean 1927' around the top of the pump. A pump was marked on a 1906 Ordnance Survey map, suggesting this is a replacement. Further information is contained in Fred Hammond’s 1997 report, ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey,’ as pump no. 77. The pump possesses industrial archaeological interest and exhibits qualities of style, proportion, ornamentation, setting, and group value, while also holding local historical interest.
