Pump in front of 20 Carnreagh Road, Hillsborough, Co Down

This is a former roadside pump, likely constructed between 1920 and 1939. It originally stood in front of number 20 Carnreagh Road, Hillsborough, in a roadside alcove close to a group of semi-detached houses. The pump was of a ‘cow tail’ design, featuring a closed head lever and a spirally decorated column topped with a fluted cap and acorn finial. It bears the inscription 'G Dugan, Lisburn' around the pump head, identifying the maker. Local sources suggest the surrounding houses were built in 1926 for ex-servicemen, and the pump was likely installed around the same time. The pump was removed around 1996 during the construction of new housing. The pump possesses industrial archaeological interest.
