Pump situated in the Farmyard, Montalto Estate, Ballynahinch, Co Down

This is a cow-tailed water pump situated within the farmyard on the Montalto Estate, near Ballynahinch, County Down. Likely dating from between 1880 and 1899, it appears on the Ordnance Survey 25-inch map of Down 29/3.

The pump is a particularly good example of its type, notable for its unusual design. It features a closed head lever and is ornamented with floral decorations around a hexagonal head, fish-scale decoration around the column, and a cap topped with an oak finial. An inscription on the spout identifies the plumber as ‘Wm J Scott, Plumber Belfast.’ The pump is centrally located within a listed courtyard (HB18/06/003A).

The pump is of industrial archaeological interest and is considered rare, contributing to its local significance. It has group value with the surrounding courtyard and other listed buildings on the Montalto Estate. It was recorded as derelict.
