Description

This is a cow-tailed water pump, likely dating from between 1900 and 1919. Originally situated on Station Road, Ballinderry, Lisburn, it was positioned to serve several houses and was accessed via a stone bridge, which remains in place. The pump is now within a private garden. It is a closed-head lever type, featuring a plain, spirally decorated column and a fluted cap topped with an acorn finial. The pump was not depicted on the 1901 Ordnance Survey map, but it appears on the 1920 edition. According to the property owner, it was probably installed around 1905 by the Lisburn Rural District Council to provide water for this and nearby residences; it was in service until approximately 20 to 25 years ago. Further information is detailed in the Environment Heritage Service report 'Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey' by Fred Hammond (January 1997), under entry number 60. The pump is considered to be of industrial archaeological interest, demonstrating good style, proportions, and ornamentation within its setting, and holds local historical, social, cultural, and economic significance.
