Description
This is a long, two-storey vernacular farmhouse. It likely dates from before 1834, although its current form probably developed in the later 1800s. The house is situated on the east side of Crabtree Road, approximately 2 kilometres southeast of Ballynahinch.
The west-facing front has a small, centrally positioned, projecting lean-to porch. To the left of the porch are two single-pane sash windows, and to the right is a similar sash window. A recessed doorway is located further to the left. The first floor has three single-pane sash windows positioned directly above the ground-floor windows. The south gable has a single sash window on the left side. The north gable is largely obscured by an outhouse, with a small window opening above the outhouse roof’s apex. The rear east facade has several small openings on both the ground and first floors. To the rear is a narrow laneway.
The west side is bounded by the rear wall of the house and the east side by a 2-metre-high retaining wall. A short bridge spans up to a first-floor level on the right side of the property. To the north, the house abuts a small outhouse. To the south is a detached outbuilding, set at a right angle to the road, featuring numerous small, randomly placed ventilation openings. The facade is finished with painted rough cast. The gabled roof is slated and has three rendered chimney stacks.
An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 shows a building on this site, although it is not mentioned in contemporary valuation records. It is possible that the existing building occupies the same footprint, but may have initially been a single-storey structure, later expanded to two storeys in common with other vernacular dwellings during the later 1800s. The property has reportedly been vacant for a number of years.
