Description
This is a substantial, relatively plain two-storey gabled farmhouse built in 1886. It stands at the end of a drive to the east of Crabtree Road, approximately two miles southeast of Ballynahinch. The symmetrical front facade faces roughly southwest.
The front entrance features a PVC door screen with a partly glazed door, sidelights and an elliptical fanlight, set within an elliptical arched recess with a simple moulded surround. To the left of the doorway is a segmental arch headed window with a PVC frame, and to the right of the doorway is a similar window, with three more windows above it on the first floor. All front windows are set on a sill course and have simple moulded surrounds. The northwest gable has two windows to the first floor, similar to the front, but without surrounds or a sill course. The southeast gable has two windows to each floor, again similar to the front.
A large two-storey gabled return extends to the rear. The gable of the return is blank. The northwest face of the return has a square window with a PVC frame on the ground floor, with a PVC door to the right. Above are two more windows, similar to the ground floor. The southeast face of the return has two windows to the first floor and one to the ground floor, again similar to the northwest face but of varying size. All openings on the return have simple geometric surrounds. To the right of the return, on the rear facade of the main portion of the house, is a window resembling those on the front.
The facade is finished in lined render, with in-and-out quoins to the main portion and a string course above the first-floor windows to the gables. An eaves course is present. The roof is slated with an overhang. Three rendered chimney stacks are visible, one to each gable. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present.
The house was built in 1886 by a Mr. McCauley. It replaced a dwelling built around 1840, which itself superseded a pre-1834 single-storey house. Historical records show the site in 1834, 1858, and around 1901.
