Bellfield, 46 Spa Road, Ballymaglave south, The Spa, Ballynahinch, County Down, BT24 8PT

Bellfield is a one and a half storey gabled farmhouse dating from around 1850, located in a hollow to the east of Spa Road, roughly 1.5 miles south of Ballynahinch in County Down. The house features decorative barge boards and two storey rear additions.

The south-west facing front is symmetrical and dominated by a central single storey flat-roofed porch with plain cornice and blocking course. The porch has a modern glazed entrance door on its north-west face and a matching glazed panel on the south-east face, with a modern glazed window to the south-west. Above the porch is a semi-circular arch-headed Georgian paned sash window (8/3 panes) with a small gable feature crowned by decorative fretwork bargeboard. To the left are two 6/6 sash windows, and to the right are two similar windows. The north-west gable has one 6/6 sash window to the left of the ground floor and two similar windows evenly spaced at first floor level, with a decorative overhanging bargeboard at the verge.

The north-east facade comprises two returns. The central section is gabled with a modern window to the right of the ground floor and a similar window directly above at first floor, with its left side merging into a hipped roof return that has one small ground floor window to the left. To the right of the gabled return on the rear of the original building is a wide modern window. The south-east facade features the gable of the original portion merging with the hipped roof return. The left gabled section displays the characteristic decorative bargeboard. At the centre is a chimney breast, with 6/6 sash windows to either side of the first floor. The hipped section has two evenly spaced 6/6 sash windows at first floor level. At ground floor, a panelled and half-glazed door is positioned to the left, with two top-hung multi-pane windows to the right.

The walls are finished with lined render and the roof is covered with natural slate. Each gable is topped by a chimney stack with mouldings and two octagonal period pots. Rainwater goods are a mixture of cast iron and PVC.

Documentary evidence from Ordnance Survey maps shows a house on the 1834 map with slightly different size and orientation. The present dwelling appears on the revised 1858 map marked as "Bellfield". Local tradition suggests the property was built by one of the current owner's ancestors, who was a doctor, and that the house once served as the local dispensary. The gabled return is believed to have been added in the later 19th century, whilst the hipped roof return is thought to date from the 1920s.
