Former school house, 59 Ballymaglave Road, The Spa, Ballymaglave south, Ballynahinch, Co Down, BT24 8QB

This is a small, single-storey, gabled schoolhouse, likely constructed in the 1880s or 1890s. It is located in the small hamlet of The Spa, on the northeastern side of the southwestern end of Ballymaglave Road. The building features rubble construction with yellow brick dressings and a modern, flat-roofed extension to the rear.

The front elevation, which faces roughly southeast, is asymmetrical. A small gabled porch is attached to the northeastern gable, and its southeastern face is flush with the main building’s southeastern façade. The entrance to the schoolhouse is through a timber-sheeted door with a semicircular fanlight, accessed by steps. The doorway is framed by yellow brick dressings, and matching brick detailing is used for quoins across the building. To the right of the doorway (on the main front façade) are three pairs of sash windows with horizontal and vertical glazing bars, arranged as four panes over four. The northwestern gable has a grouping of three tall, narrow, semicircular-headed windows, the central one being the tallest. These windows have sash frames with glazing bars arranged as one-fifth, three-fifths, and one-fifth. The northeastern gable mirrors this grouping, with the porch set to its left. A narrow sash window with vertical glazing bars (two panes over two) is present in the northeastern gable of the porch. A small section of wall also projects from this gable. The northwestern face of the porch appears to have once contained a blocked red brick dressed opening, now rendered with cement. The rear façade is entirely obscured by the modern, flat-roofed extension, which has cement rendering and modern windows. The original building's slate roof has a slight overhang with exposed rafter tails, plain barges, and simple brackets to the gables. A small red brick chimney stack is located near the eaves at the rear, and mainly cast iron rainwater goods are present. The original section of the building is set on a bevelled base. Simple iron railings are located along the southeastern and northeastern edges.

The schoolhouse likely dates from the 1880s to 1890s and was likely built in connection with the nearby Spa Presbyterian Church, which itself dates from 1872. It was replaced by a larger, newer school constructed immediately to the northeast around 1965. Following its closure as a school, the building was briefly used as a shop and now serves as a meeting place for a local club.
