Description
This is a one and a half storey house, likely of probable pre-1834 origin, though it probably attained its present appearance around 1890-1900. The house is situated in a hollow to the east of Spa Road, approximately 1.5 miles south of Ballynahinch.
The architectural style is unusual but relatively plain. The house features a gabled entrance bay added in red brick, contrasting with the main structure which appears to be rubble-built. The south front has a two-storey gabled projection roughly to the right of centre. A plain sheeted timber door is on the east face of the ground floor. The south face has a window on both the ground and first floors. A 2/2 sash window is on the first floor of the west face of the porch; the ground floor is partially obscured by a small lean-to extension. The lean-to's south face has a small window to the left and a timber-sheeted door to the right, while its west face is blank. A steel-sheeted door is located to the left of the lean-to. The west gable has two 6/6 sash windows on the first floor, and the ground floor is blank. The east gable has a single, centrally placed first-floor window. The north façade has five evenly spaced 6/6 sash windows, finished with rough cast. The roof is slated and topped with two central chimney stacks, and there is a small skylight to the rear. Sections of cast iron pipework are present.
The building may be the one shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1834 and 1858, and it seems the entrance was originally on the north side. The owner believes the property may have operated as an inn or coach house, though this is considered unlikely given its size and location. It is possible it served as a guest house for visitors to The Spa, which was common for properties in the area. The building appears to have been abandoned and is currently in poor condition.
