Pump, The Courtyard, Clifton Lodge, Shebeg, Co. Fermanagh

This is a well-maintained water pump of an unusual design, located in the courtyard of the listed Clifton Lodge in the townland of Shebeg, County Fermanagh. The pump, likely dating from between 1880 and 1899, is an open-head design and stands over a large well. It features a cast coat of arms and a maker’s name, possibly ‘MALLET…DUBLIN’. The pump is notable for its industrial archaeological interest and rarity. It is shown on the 1907 Ordnance Survey 25-inch map (held at the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland, reference PRONI OS 10/4/34/7/1) and is further documented in the Environment Heritage Service Report ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’ by Fred Hamond (January 1997), Pump No 7. The pump contributes to the group value and setting of Clifton Lodge and exhibits notable style, proportion, and ornamentation.
