Milestone, Killycrutten, Co.Fermanagh

The milestone dates from between 1810 and 1835 and is one of a group of 17 original milestones that marked distances of one Irish mile from Enniskillen to the border of County Fermanagh along a former mail coach road extending through County Cavan to Dublin. Twelve of these milestones survive, two of which have been relocated. This milestone is situated ten Irish miles from Enniskillen, on Main Street in Killycrutten.

The milestone is carved from local limestone and has a square plan, rising slightly over one metre in height. The stones in the set vary slightly in design, reflecting the uneven, vernacular craftsmanship of local workers. Generally, the milestones gently taper to form an elongated prism, although this tapering is less pronounced on some. The front and rear elevations are flush, while the side elevations often step out at a low level to define a base and overhang at the top with a roll that tapers upward to a crown profile. The stone displays distances of 70.5 miles to Dublin and 15.5 miles to Cavan, alongside the distance from Enniskillen. Ordnance Survey benchmark information is also inscribed on the stone. It leans against the boundary wall of Beech House, a listed dwelling house dating from around 1845, although the boundary wall itself is likely of earlier origin.
