Description

This is a freestanding cast-iron milepost erected in the early 20th century on the main A2 road between Cushendall and Ballycastle. It stands in its original position on the verge along the south side of Cushendall Road in front of number 119.

The milepost is of vee cross-section with a canted top and open back. It is painted white with its bas-relief edges and legends picked out in black, executed in serif lettering. The inscriptions on its canted sides read: "Belfast / 62" on the hip (top cant), "Ballycastle / 3? / miles" on the south-east facing cant, and "Cushendall / 12¾ / miles" on the north-west facing side.

The post's position reflects the principle that each milepost was positioned at a whole-mile distance from Belfast, as measured from the former General Post Office in Royal Avenue. The inscriptions record distances not only in whole miles but also in one-eighth and one-quarter mile divisions, reflecting the slower modes of transport—on foot and by horse—that prevailed when the post was erected. Each post was a unique casting, configured with legends specific to the mileage of its particular location.

The milepost does not appear on the 1857 Ordnance Survey map but first appears on the 1903-04 edition, captioned "M.P. 3? 12¾" to denote distances from Ballycastle and Cushendall. It is similarly recorded on the 1922 edition. The marker may date from the reorganisation of local government in Ireland in 1898.

Due to successive road resurfacing, the post is now partially buried in the surrounding tarmac, with the base buried up to the level of its inscriptions. A similar milepost (HB05/04/037), slightly repositioned, survives just over a mile further along the same road towards Ballycastle. Together, these two posts on the A2 through Moyle represent rare survivals; most comparable examples have been lost to road widening, traffic impacts, and theft. The milepost is of local and historical interest, and is situated behind the painted and rendered garden wall of number 119, a two-storey dwelling, with open fields beyond.
