Description
Telephone Kiosk at 225 Gola Road, Enniskillen
This K6 telephone kiosk was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. It is a pre-1953 model, as indicated by the Tudor Crown insignia, and remains in its original location opposite the former post office. The kiosk was installed sometime after 1936 but before 1953, likely under the Jubilee Concession scheme which allowed towns and villages with a post office to apply for a kiosk, or possibly under the subsequent Tercentenary Concession or Rural Allocation scheme.
The K6 was developed from Scott's earlier designs, the larger K2 (introduced in 1926) and K3 (1929). It became the most successful telephone kiosk model ever produced, with approximately 60,000 distributed throughout the UK from 1936 onwards, making it increasingly rare today due to modern mobile phone use.
The kiosk is constructed of cast-iron, painted red, with a teak door and a domed roof. It is compact and was easily mass-produced. The fenestration consists of margined panes arranged in a 1x8 pattern. A Tudor Crown insignia in bas-relief is positioned centrally on the domed roof on each of the four elevations, with a sign below displaying 'Telephone' in black serif font on a white background. The kiosk has retained a large proportion of its original glass panes, and internal fittings including leather straps and closer arm mechanisms remain intact and functioning.
Some margin paned windows have been replaced with perspex. The door handle may be a replacement, and there are signs of discolouration on the 'Telephone' display on the door elevation. During its lifetime, the kiosk has been adapted with equipment upgrades and vandal-proofing measures as necessary, though these adjustments have not compromised its overall significance.
The kiosk sits prominently in a rural setting along the verge of Gola Road adjacent to a bus stop, remaining largely visible in its original location. It played an important role in the social and cultural development of the area, serving as the only means of communication to further locations.
