Milestone 3 Mile, Near 4 Gola Road, Tamlaght, Enniskillen, BT74 4AF

This milestone, erected between approximately 1810 and 1835, is one of a surviving series of 12 (from an original set of 17) that marked intervals of one Irish mile along the mail coach road running from Enniskillen through Cavan to Dublin. It stands three Irish miles from Enniskillen, at the head of a stretch of road newly built for the mail coach in the early 19th century, now known as Gola Road.

The milestone is carved from local limestone and is square in plan, standing just over one metre tall. It tapers gently upward to form an elongated prism shape. While the front and rear faces are flush, the side elevations are more distinctively profiled: they step outward at low level to define a base, then overhang at the top with a roll that tapers upward to a crown profile, completing an ornate terminus. This profiled top appears to be unique to this series of milestones. The slightly uneven, individual character of the stones across the group suggests they were made by local craftsmen, giving the series a vernacular quality.

This particular stone has sustained significant damage over the years and shows evidence of repair. Originally it would have displayed the distance of 77.5 miles to Dublin and 22.5 miles to Cavan, in addition to the distance from Enniskillen. Some letters and numerals remain visible.

The section of road where the milestones stand, between Enniskillen and Wattlebridge, was largely constructed between 1808 and 1822 to provide a broad, flat road suitable for mail coaches. The route remained in use by the mail coach service, with some re-routing, until 1859 and the coming of the railways. The mail coach system represented arguably the single most important communications network established across these islands before the railway age, making these milestones among the few surviving physical reminders of that era in County Fermanagh.

The group's significance is further enhanced by the existence along the same stretch of road of a contemporary coaching inn. Of the 12 surviving milestones in the series, two have been relocated and one was already listed before this assessment. This milestone retains its original form, some original lettering, and remains in its original location, contributing meaningfully to the story of the group as a whole.
