Description
South Lodge (Heather House) is a single-storey T-shaped thatched gate lodge built around 1840, probably to designs by Sir Richard Morrison. It stands on the north side of the road that runs south-easterly from Enniskillen towards Fivemiletown, approximately two miles from Enniskillen, occupying a commanding position at a former approach to the Castle Coole demesne.
The building has rendered walls colour-washed in ochre and picked out in black on the stone base. The widely overhanging roof thatch, covered in reed, follows the shape of the T-plan and extends over a bay window on the north-east elevation and provides coverings for entrances on the south-east and north-west sides. The picturesque appearance is enhanced by fourteen cleaned timber logs supporting the eaves. A central corbelled brick chimney carries three small clay pots, with the centre pot finished with a spark arrester.
The fenestration consists of metal lattice-paned casements set in plain chamfered stone surrounds. The north-west elevation has a pair of windows and a rear door set back in the side of the south-west projection. The south-west elevation has a single window. The north-east elevation features a projecting canted bay with four lights. The south-east elevation has a pair of windows and the entrance door set back in the side of the north-east section. Stone flags provide hard standing at the entrances and on the north-west side.
The building was recorded in the 1860 valuation at £2. It is the only remaining example of a thatched gate lodge and one of very few formally designed thatched buildings to survive, the majority being vernacular and informal in style. The building remains unaltered and represents an important survival of the Picturesque style applied to an ancillary structure in a prominent position.
