Cottage, Lehinch, Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh, BT92 8BE

The building was a small vernacular cottage located in Lehinch, Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh. Likely dating from between 1820 and 1839, it was shown on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map and subsequent editions. The cottage was not recorded in the 1835 Valuation, suggesting a modest structure, but was valued at £3 in the 1862 Valuation. The 1983 Historic Monuments and Buildings Board survey card described the cottage as a single-storey thatched building with an attic. It had two low, rendered crosswall chimneys. The thatch was not extended over the gables, was made from local reeds, and featured scalloped detailing at the ridge. The stone walls were limewashed, with a tarred plinth and a slight stone corbel at the front. The cottage featured modern windows with projecting stone cills and a semi-circular window over the modern front door, also featuring a projecting stone cill. The original door was described as sheeted, with sidelights, cills rising halfway up the door’s height, and a rectangular fanlight. The current owner maintains the thatch using reeds harvested from Lehinch Lough. The building has since been demolished to make way for a replacement dwelling.
