Description
This is a well-constructed bridge, built between 1840 and 1859, that provides a visual contrast to the earlier bridge nearby. While it lacks special architectural, historical, or landscape merit for listing purposes, it possesses some industrial archaeological interest. The bridge is of mid-19th century date and replaced the older Old Drumcru Bridge.
The single segmental span carries a two-lane minor road over a stream, located downstream of Old Drumcru Bridge. It is constructed entirely of finely dressed limestone blocks. The parapets have projecting copings, decorated with punched and margined side faces and raised, shallow-pitched top faces. The parapets terminate in slightly raised, projecting piers. A water pipe runs across the downstream (north) face, with a second pipe located just beyond, supported by concrete piers. An electrical cable spans the upstream face. The downstream face is now heavily overgrown. Damage to the upstream pier on the right bank is evident, resulting from a vehicle impact.
The bridge first appeared on the 1857 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map, labelled "Drumcru Bridge (New)." Ownership is by central government.
