Description

The terrace comprised two houses, likely built between 1820 and 1839. Located on the High Street in Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh, it was originally listed in the 1836 Valuation book as a dwelling belonging to Samuel Clarke, valued at £29, with dimensions of 41ft x 36ft x 28ft, plus annexes and a kitchen. By 1860 the property belonged to Isabella Clarke and was similar in size, incorporating a 9ft x 12ft porch, with the ground floor partially used as a merchant’s office. By 1873, the business of tobacco storage had ceased, and some buildings were described as “old tobacco stores."

The building was a two-storey structure with an attic, featuring a pitched slate roof and brick chimneys to each gable. The walls were roughcast and painted grey. The front elevation had three windows on each floor. These were double-hung casement windows with Georgian 8/8 panes and moulded architraves. The ground floor included a window, a glazed and sheeted door with a blocked fanlight, and a central doorway framed by fluted pilasters, carved brackets supporting a projecting cornice above the lintel, and a blocked fanlight; two further windows were present, with the left-hand ground floor window featuring a chevron decorative frieze to the cill. A two-storey porch was set back from the front on the south gable. A roundel and string course adorned the front elevation. A four-panelled door with a plain surround and a decorative semi-circular fanlight, accessed by three stone steps with a decorative wrought-iron handrail, gave access to the building. Double-hung windows with Georgian panes were located in the porch on both floors. Recesses were present on each side of the ground floor window. A two-light attic window was present on the gable. The overall frontage was approximately 50ft. The terrace was demolished as part of a road improvement scheme.
