Description
A two-storey bank on the east side of Church Street in Newtownbutler Village, occupying two sections aligned north-south and sloping with the street. The building is much altered and retains few features of interest. The southern section is set back slightly and is lower than the northern.
Both sections have pitched artificial slate roofs. The northern section has two brick chimneys, one positioned at the north gable and one to the left of centre. The southern section has a single brick chimney at the south gable. Advanced cement-rendered and painted eaves support metal rainwater goods. All walls are wet-dashed and painted with stepped stucco quoins at the north and south ends of the façade only, over a contrasting cement-rendered base course.
The northern section's principal elevation faces west and contains three openings to the ground floor. At the extreme left is a double-leaf four-panelled door flanked by a tall 1x3 window on either side, all contained within a wide cement-rendered reveal with moulded architrave. At the centre is a large landscape fixed-pane window, with a smaller fixed-pane window to the right-hand side. The first floor has three equally spaced windows, all 6/6 sliding sashes with concrete cills. The left gable has a window at first floor set to the left. The right gable is almost completely abutted by the southern section and to the ground floor left by an entrance porch, with the exposed section remaining blank.
The southern section's principal elevation also faces west. An entrance porch, set within the angle of the two sections at the extreme left of the ground floor, has a flat felted roof and corbelled eaves supported on four block brackets. A four-panelled timber door is slightly recessed between two plain pilasters and accessed by a single stone step. The exposed right cheek has a 1x4 window with painted stone cill. The exposed right bay has a window with panelled shutters. The first floor has two equally spaced windows. The left gable abuts the northern section, while the right gable is completely abutted by an adjoining building.
According to historical records, a building was shown on the 1836 Valuation map described as one storey in the first Valuation book of the same date. The site was redeveloped in the mid-nineteenth century. The 1860 Valuation book records that the property then belonged to Jonathan Thornhill, with dimensions given as: house 24 feet by 18 feet by 2 storeys and 39 feet by 21 feet by 2 storeys, porch 9 feet by 3 feet by 1 storey, and return 21 feet by 9 feet by 1 storey. The existing building was not originally designed as a bank but was an adaptation of an existing house.
