Description
This is a shallow segmental stone bridge carrying a two-lane road and footpaths over the River Finn. It was likely constructed between 1820 and 1840, appearing on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 onwards. The bridge is built of finely dressed sandstone blocks, regularly laid, with vee-jointed voussoirs that step into the spandrels’ horizontal coursing. The abutments have several basal courses that step out progressively towards the water. A finely-dressed string course projects across the upstream (east) face just above arch crown level, continuing around the out-projecting piers, where the copings are rounded in cross-section. A narrow, original paved access track leads down to the water’s edge on the upstream left bank. The downstream (west) side has been widened relatively recently with a flat reinforced-concrete span, which obscures much of the original bridge facing and approach walls. Elements of the original parapet and coping have been incorporated into the widening, with a water pipe now crossing the face. A massive concrete buttress now obscures much of the upstream approach wall on the right bank. Although largely obscured by later additions, it possesses industrial archaeological interest.
