Description

Eden Cottage was a symmetrical, two-storey, three-bay house situated on the west side of Bridge Street, Newtownbutler, to the north of St Mary’s RC Church. It was aligned roughly north-south and dated to between 1880 and 1899, first appearing in the Valuation Revision book entry of 1892 when occupied by James Maguire.

The house had a pitched natural slate roof with a decorative fishscale pattern on the front pitch, and overhanging eaves with plain timber bargeboards to the gables. Half-round metal rainwater goods were also present. The walls were cement-dashed and painted, with stepped and painted stone quoins. The principal elevation, facing east, featured a modern stained timber entrance door with a narrow glazed transom, set within moulded stucco reveals. Canted bay windows with natural slate roofs were positioned to the left and right bays, each containing a 1/1 margin-paned exposed-box sliding sash window. Above, three similarly detailed windows were present on the first floor with painted stone cills, all reduced in height. A top-hung timber casement was located on the left gable’s first floor, right side.

The rear elevation was abutted to the left by a single-storey return with a monopitched roof. The exposed right section included a 1/1 margin-paned sash window to the ground floor left and a 2/2 sliding sash window to the first floor. The return had a top-hung casement window to its end gable, and a modern timber sheeted door to the right cheek; the left cheek was inaccessible. The right gable featured two first floor windows matching the façade, as well as a blind roundel to the apex.

The front site was enclosed by a hedgerow and chamfered, painted gate piers with shallow caps and finials, supporting a modern cast-iron gate. The two central gate piers were later demolished.

As of 2022, the building has been demolished. In 2005, prior to demolition, the front door and canted bay windows were boarded up, and other windows were broken.
