Description
Lurganboy House is a symmetrical two-storey, three-bay house aligned southwest to northeast on the east side of Bridge Street, directly south of Newtownbutler village, dating to the early 19th century. It retains a limited degree of character and a few original interior features.
The pitched artificial slate roof is topped with pebble-dashed chimneys to each gable. Advanced eaves are supported by modern timber soffits with ogee plastic rainwater goods. The walls are pebble-dashed over a painted cement-rendered base course. Windows are 2/2 sliding sashes with horns, exposed boxes, and stone cills.
The principal elevation faces northwest. To the centre is a tongue-and-groove sheeted door with cast-iron door furniture, narrow sidelights, and a segmental-headed fanlight. The bays to either side contain windows on the ground floor. On the first floor, three windows of diminished height align above the ground floor openings. The centre window is a 2x2 side-hung casement, while the flanking windows are sashes. The left gable is abutted by a lower outbuilding detailed as the house but with natural slates and a chimney to the gable, its exposed section being blank. The northwest elevation has a 3x2 fixed-pane window with flush cill set to the right, with a blank gable above.
The rear elevation has two tongue-and-groove sheeted doors, one to the left and one to the right of centre. The rear elevation of the main block is abutted to centre by a shallow full-height return, which has a chimney to its rear gable. The left bay has a timber top-hung casement at first floor with concrete cill at ground floor. The right bay has a window to the right-hand side at ground floor and to first floor centre. All rear windows are top-hung casements. The southeast face has a window to first floor right and a narrow window to ground floor left. The left cheek has a window to each floor. The right cheek is abutted by a single-storey lean-to annexe with monopitched roof. The annexe has a door to the southeast face and a window to its exposed cheek. The right gable of the main block has a sliding sash window to each side at first floor.
A building is shown on this plot on the 1834 Ordnance Survey map. The 1835 Valuation book describes it as a dwelling belonging to Captain Maguire, valued at £3 12s 0d, suggesting a substantial structure. By 1862, James Maguire was the occupant, and the building's dimensions are given as 42 feet by 24 feet by 2 storeys, with a return measuring 40 feet 6 inches by 15 feet by 1 storey. It is cited as Lurganboy Cottage on the 1907 Ordnance Survey map.
The house is set within a maturely planted garden and enclosed from the road by a low rubble stone wall with a hedge. It is accessed by a modern decorative gate hung on square-in-section chamfered stone gate piers with raised and fielded panels to each side and moulded stone coping.
