Description
A rare roadside milestone provides interest to the locality and is evocative of the time before automobiles. Located at Drumcru Cross Roads, where the roads to Crom and Wattle Bridge meet, this milestone is a large limestone block, finely dressed on its two road-facing sides and rounded at the top. It stands at a slight angle, approximately 110cm high and 50cm square in cross-section. One face displays the inscription "CRUM CASTLE / 2 MILES / LISNASKEA / 6 MILES" in 5cm high capitals. The other face reads "[MONAGHAN?] / [?] MILES / CAVAN / 10 MILES." The milestone was likely erected in the early 1800s, possibly by the Post Office, following improvements to mailcoach roads authorized by an Act of 1805. An Ordnance Survey map from 1834 identifies the road as the "Mail Coach road to Dublin and Cavan," though the milestone itself is too small to appear on later maps. It is an example of industrial archaeology and holds local historical significance due to its rarity.
