Description
This is an attractive two-storey vernacular house of significant character, likely dating from the early 1900s, situated in the Derrygennedy townland of Newtownbutler, County Fermanagh. The house is aligned northeast-southwest and set back to the west of Derrygennedy. It has a pitched roof covered in natural slate, with rendered chimneys positioned between the bays and an advanced eaves board displaying exposed rafter tails, supporting half-round metal rainwater goods. The walls are constructed of wet-dashed random rubble.
The principal, northwest-facing elevation features a shallow segmental-headed opening centrally containing a four-panelled timber entrance door with three-quarter height sidelights featuring fixed panes and stone cills. Flanking the entrance door are sliding sash windows with margin-paned glass and stone cills. Above, on the first floor, are three windows of a reduced height. The left gable is abutted by a single-storey addition, considered to be of no particular interest. A single window is set into the first floor of the left gable. The rear elevation includes a tongue-and-groove sheeted door to the right of the centre bay, with a window to its left. Above this are a two-over-two sliding sash window, and a metal-framed window in the right bay. All windows on the rear elevation lack cills. The right gable features a window on each floor.
Historical records indicate buildings existed on the site on both the 1834 and 1857 Ordnance Survey maps, but with a different alignment than the present house. A change in the site’s valuation from £3.10s.0d to £2.10s.0d in 1872, with no further changes thereafter, may suggest the erection of the current house, although the low valuation makes this uncertain; manuscript versions of the valuation records lack building dimensions. The house is shown in its present form on the 1907 Ordnance Survey map. It retains many original features and demonstrates a high quality of vernacular design, with good proportions and survival of interior features. It holds local historical interest.
