Description
36 Derryad Road is a one-and-a-half-storey lobby entry thatched house built before 1862. The building stands approximately four miles south-west of Lisnaskea, accessed by turning southwards at Drumguiff Cross Roads. It is gabled to the road and faces north-east, overlooking a garden, with entrance via a courtyard of which the rear south-west elevation forms one side.
The house is constructed of stone with a roughcast and whitened finish. The thatched roof, finished between plastered skews, rises slightly above the entrance to accommodate a small three-pane window lighting the landing. A plain chimneystack with one pot and spark arrester sits above the central hearth. The original lobby entry and central hearth layout remain clearly discernible at both levels.
The front elevation features a four-panel entrance door with sidelights, flanked to the left by two and to the right by one vertically sliding sash window, each divided into two lights by vertical glazing bars and fitted with horns. The rear elevation is entered by a half door, glazed at the top and panelled below with stain finish. To the left of the rear door is one window; to the right are three, the second and third placed towards the right extremity. Each gable contains a single sashed window. All fenestration is of similar type with sashes provided with horns. The building has no rainwater goods.
The property appears on Ordnance Survey maps from 1834 onwards. It was not included in the valuation of circa 1835 but is recorded in the 1862 valuation, where George Kettyle was the occupant, John Madden the immediate lessor, and the rateable value £2. While positive identification with the building shown on the 1st edition Ordnance Survey map is not possible, its inclusion in the 1862 valuation confirms pre-1862 construction.
