House, Kilturk West, Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh, BT92 8BS

This is a two-storey, three-bay roadside house located at the southeastern side of the Kilturk West townland, County Fermanagh. It is likely to date from the early 19th century, between 1820 and 1839, based on its depiction on an 1834 Ordnance Survey map and its description in the 1835 Valuation book, where it was recorded as occupied by Robert Liddell and measuring 47 feet by 24 feet by 16 feet – dimensions consistent with the present building.

The house has been extensively refurbished and has lost much of its original character, retaining only its basic style and proportions. The roof is now covered with artificial slate tiles, featuring raised cement skews. There are two yellow brick chimneys with moulded brick copings, one at the party wall between each bay. Advanced concrete eaves support plastic rainwater goods. The exterior walls are harled and feature stepped, cement-rendered quoins and a base course. The windows are modern uPVC casements with two panes per sash, top-hung, and concrete cills. The principal, southeast-facing elevation has a central entrance recessed within a shallow, semi-elliptical reveal. This reveal is framed by reeded cast cement pilasters that support a moulded keyblocked head and contains a four-panelled timber door with decorative glazed sidelights and a spiderweb fanlight. Windows flank the entrance. Above the ground floor openings are three windows. The left-hand gable features a canted bay window on the ground floor centre, with a hipped artificial slate roof and windows on all three sides, the central one being larger. A single window is centrally placed on the first floor above the bay. The rear elevation has a full-height return abutting the left bay and the left side of the central bay. The remaining section is abutted at ground floor level only by a single-storey addition. The exposed section of the rear elevation has a window on the first floor. The return section is designed as a house, with a chimney to the exposed gable, mirroring the style of the main house. The gable itself has a window on each floor towards the left. The left cheek of the gable has two windows on each floor, while the right cheek is abutted by the ground floor addition and has a first-floor window. The addition has a monopitched artificial slate roof. The rear face of the addition has a modern timber door to the right of centre and two windows; one at the extreme right end and one to the left of centre. The exposed right end of the addition is blank, as is the right gable of the main house.

The house is set perpendicular to the road; two single-storey outbuildings, both also extensively refurbished, are located to the rear and on the opposite side of the road.
