East Lodge, Crom Castle Estate, Aghadrum, Newtownbutler, Co. Fermanagh, BT92 8AP

East Lodge is a picturesque 19th-century gate lodge situated at the east entrance of Crom Castle Estate. Although refurbished, it retains numerous original features of interest and contributes significantly to the group value of the Crom Estate.

The lodge comprises two bays: a two-story, cross-gabled bay aligned north-south, and a single-story bay aligned west-east. The roof is pitched natural slate, featuring fretted bargeboards and pointed finials to the gables. A prominent ashlar sandstone chimney with an advanced stepped chimney breast is centrally located on the east elevation. The overhanging boxed eaves support half-round metal rainwater goods. The walls are lime-rendered over a slightly projecting base course. Windows are timber sliding sashes with painted stone sills, most being 2/2 in design.

The principal elevation faces south. The cross-gabled bay has a canted bay with a hipped natural slate roof to the ground floor, each face containing a window, the south-facing window being wider. An apex window is positioned above the canted bay. The left bay is blank. A projecting gabled entrance porch, detailed as if it were part of the main house, abuts the angle of the two bays, advancing slightly and rising to the eaves level of the cross gable. The south face has a vertically and horizontally jointed sheeted door; the east face abuts the cross-gable; and the west face has a fixed lattice window with four panes horizontally and one vertically, with a concrete cill. A raised skylight with a hipped natural slate roof is situated behind the porch, set in the angle of the two roofs, glazed to the west and blank to the south. The west gable mirrors the detailing of the front façade. The north elevation is largely abutted to the ground floor by an extension. The exposed first floor of the cross gable has a top-hung timber casement window. The extension’s roof is flat and felted, with walls matching those of the main lodge. Its north face has a vertically and horizontally jointed sheeted door to the left, followed by timber casement windows to centre and right, with a blank western cheek and a long, narrow landscape window below the eaves on its east face. The east elevation is otherwise blank, featuring the central stepped sandstone chimney breast.

The lodge stands within a small garden at the east entrance to Crom Castle Estate.

Thought to have been built around 1840, the lodge was not designed by Edward Blore. It first appears on the Ordnance Survey 6-inch map of 1857, labelled "Gate Ho". The listing includes the house, gate, and gate piers.
