Description

This is a pleasant, small vernacular house situated on a secluded site on a lane to the west of Doohat Townland. Likely dating to between 1820 and 1839, it occupies a tranquil setting on the hinterland of the Crom estate. The house is a single storey, three-bay dwelling aligned southwest-northeast. It has a pitched roof covered in artificial slate, with two cement-rendered chimneys positioned between each bay. A timber eaves board supports half-round metal rainwater goods. The walls are harled. The windows are predominantly 1/1 sliding sash windows with horns and stone cills. The principal elevation faces southeast, with a window in the centre of the left bay. The central bay features a window to the left and a timber door with tongue-and-groove (t+g) sheeted cladding and brass door furniture to the right. The right bay has a timber top-hung casement window centrally. The left gable is blank and largely obscured by ivy. The rear elevation has a window in each bay. The right gable abuts a lower outbuilding; the exposed section of this gable is blank. This outbuilding is similarly constructed to the main house with a pitched corrugated metal roof. On the southeast elevation of the outbuilding, a door is located to the extreme right, adjacent to another outbuilding of matching design. The exposed gable of this second outbuilding has an infilled window opening, while the rear has an opening to the left. The southwest face of the second outbuilding includes a t+g-sheeted door centrally and a window to the northeast, with a blank gable. A small garden sits to the front, enclosed by low, interlocking wrought-iron railings supported on a cement-rendered base with square-in-section piers at each end. A building is depicted at this location on the 1834 Ordnance Survey 6-inch map. The house was occupied by John Hanley in 1862, and valued at £2; its valuation did not change thereafter, suggesting it was a small vernacular dwelling.
