Description
This is a wall-mounted lever pump situated at 12 The Quay, Strangford, contributing significantly to the character of the area. Likely dating from between 1900 and 1919, it is an unusual example because it draws water from a well located almost at ground level. The pump itself is largely unadorned, with a fluted cap, and connected to the well via a 2-inch pipe. An inscription around the top of the pump states “Patent no. 1842.” According to local information, the pump was installed by the De Ross Estate. Immediately behind the pump is a blocked-up doorway containing a tablet dated 1824. Further details are documented in the Environment Heritage Service report ‘Water Pumps in Northern Ireland: A Preliminary Survey’ by Fred Hammond (January 1997), Pump No. 26. The pump is of industrial archaeological interest, exhibits notable style, proportion, and setting, and is valued for its contribution to the group value of the surrounding area; it is also located within a conservation area and holds local interest reflective of social, cultural, and economic importance.
