Pump at, 12 The Quay, Strangford, Co Down

This is a wall-mounted lever pump situated at 12 The Quay, Strangford, contributing significantly to the character of the area. Likely dating from between 1900 and 1919, it is an unusual example because it draws water from a well located almost at ground level. The pump itself is largely unadorned, with a fluted cap, and connected to the well via a 2-inch pipe. An inscription around the top of the pump states “Patent no. 1842.” According to local information, the pump was installed by the De Ross Estate. Immediately behind the pump is a blocked-up doorway containing a tablet dated 1824.
